What makes one subwoofer better than another?
The real difference between one subwoofer and another isn’t that one will produce more bass; in fact it’s how much of the bass it can play at the quoted volume.
Generally subwoofers are designed to play bass from about 20hz up to 100hz. Most subwoofers are able to play bass throughout this range, but a low quality subwoofer may only be able to produce a small portion of the bass frequencies at the quoted volume. The missing frequencies are being played by the subwoofer, but at a much lower volume so you don’t hear them as well.
A quality subwoofer, such as a Rockford Fosgate or /////Alpine, are able to produce a wider range of bass frequencies at the quoted volume so you hear more of the bass. The size of a subwoofer is also crucial. A 10” sub can play very fast punchy bass, but doesn’t have the ability to play low rumbling bass and may struggle in a large car, good for music but not great for movies. A 15”, subwoofer will play very low frequencies but because of its size it can’t play fast bass so it’s not good for some music and may be over powering in a small car. A 12” sub is the most common as it’s a happy medium between the two.
If SPL or being the loudest car in town is your game, then heaps of power is the key. A 1000-Watt amp will make any subwoofer loud, but a low quality subwoofer will probably produce more smoke than SPL after a while!
