Why Do Cars Need Subwoofers?
Subwoofers are not just the things that let everyone know you have a loud stereo. Subwoofers are very important in cars for three reasons. Firstly, the feel. Subwoofers produce bass that can be felt giving a more ‘live’ feeling as if you were at the concert. Secondly, overcoming road noise. All cars are noisy when driving, due to wind etc. If you measure these sounds while driving they are very loud at between 40hz and 100hz, which happens to be the bass frequencies you listen to in music. So if you are driving you can hear the music but the bass is being lost in the road noise.
Your car speakers aren’t big enough to produce lots of low bass so a subwoofer is needed to overcome the problem. A subwoofer plays typically from 20hz up to around 100hz overcoming road noise, so you get to hear all of the music. Thirdly when you have a subwoofer playing, the bass can be cut out of the other speakers, allowing them to work much clearer and last longer as they aren’t trying to produce bass. Subwoofers don’t need to be super loud!!! They just need to be louder than the road noise. Most people think
subwoofers are expensive and only for the real enthusiast but this is not the case. /////ALPINE have exceptional quality subwoofers from as low as $149.00 and an amp to run it from about $349.00. By the way, some manufacturers claim their head units are powerful enough to run a subwoofer. This is stretching the truth to say the least!
A subwoofer is a very large stiff speaker that needs a lot of power to perform effectively. As a general rule, an amp at least twice the power of a CD player is needed, or your engineers at Hobart Car Audio 141 Murray Street or call 62342522 for some FREE ADVICE.
